Giro della Donna adds women’s and men’s NRS race in 2018

by Matt de Neef

CyclingTips is thrilled to announce that the Giro della Donna will expand in 2018 to include a National Road Series (NRS) stage race for both men and women. The Giro della Donna will be the last event on the 2018 NRS calendar and will feature two days of racing, the second of which will comprise a loop of the existing Giro della Donna circuit.

“We’re thrilled to be a part of the evolution of the NRS with Cycling Australia,” said CyclingTips founder Wade Wallace. “With a big mountain pass, a 13km gravel sector, and a true mountaintop finish, the amazing Giro della Donna course will prove to be one of the NRS’ most difficult race days and a Monument in the calendar in future years. The overall feel of the Giro della Donna being a ‘festival of cycling’ won’t change, but will rather be enhanced by the addition of a spectacle race like this.

“The addition of a Saturday stage will add to the festivities of the weekend for both fondo participants and their families, as well as for the locals in the townships and surrounding areas of Warburton and Marysville. In short, it’s going to be an incredible weekend of cycling.”

Simon O’Callaghan, CEO of Yarra Ranges Tourism, said the expansion of the Giro della Donna is a boon for the region.

“The Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges is really excited to be see the recognition of the Giro della Donna in the National Road Series. This special event just keeps growing in stature,” he said. “The inclusion of the Giro della Donna in the National Road Series is confirmation of our growing reputation for cycling both on-road and off. The riders will be treated to our pristine environment as they ride through temperate rainforest and experience the closest alpine ascent to Melbourne.”

The women’s and men’s Giro della Donna NRS tour will be held on November 24-25, 2018. Stay posted to CyclingTips and Cycling Australia for more information.
