Giro Rosa Round-up: another strike for the Americans, with Stevens winning the ITT and Guarnier keeping pink

by Jeanine Laudy

Last year, it was Anna van der Breggen (Rabo-Liv) who climbed into the Giro Rosa lead after a similar looking individual time trial, winning the 2015 Giro Rosa a day later. This year she started her time trial with a 2’18” gap to the same pink jersey wearer, Megan Guarnier (Boels-Dolmans). It looked like a difficult task for Van der Breggen to pull the same trick this year.

Indeed she wasn’t able to get into the pink jersey after today’s stage, but she did have a great ride, finishing .72 seconds ahead of Elisa Longo Borghini (Wiggle-High5). It ended up being the second best time, behind winner Evelyn Stevens (Boels-Dolmans). Megan Guarnier (Boels-Dolmans) finished in fourth, thirty seconds behind Stevens, and was able to retain her GC lead.

It’s Stevens’ third stage win this Giro Rosa and Guarnier picked up her third pink jersey after the stage.

With two more stages to go, it looks like only the two American riders of the Boels-Dolmans team are left with a chance to win the 2016 Giro Rosa.
