Barnes won the opening stage of the four-stage Spanish race, earning herself a couple days in the leader’s jersey. She slipped to second overall on Saturday’s stage 3 as Nicole Steigenga took a solo victory over the field and stage 2 winner Marta Bastianelli (Ale Cipollini) jumped to the top of the GC.
But Barnes moved back into the overall lead on the final stage by getting into an elite nine-rider lead group then winning the sprint from that group.
