Hodeg lands first pro win in Handzame Classic

Two days after Fabio Jakobsen won the Nokere Koerse race, another new QuickStep Floors signing grabbed his debut victory with the team. Alvaro Hodeg sprinted to victory at the end of Friday’s Handzame Classic, blasting in ahead of Kristoffer Halvorsen (Team Sky), Pascal Ackermann (Bora-hansgrohe), Matteo Pellucchi (Bora-hansgrohe), Adam Blythe (Aqua Blue Sport) and the rest of the bunch.

“It’s difficult to tell you how I’m feeling after this win,” the Colombian said. “It means the world to take my maiden pro victory with Quick-Step Floors, the team I have always dreamt of racing for. I always try to do my best and today it wasn’t any different.”

Ten riders got clear but the QuickStep team worked to limit their gains and then reel them in. Florian Sénéchal crashed with seven kilometres remaining but although the team was down one man, that didn’t hamper Hodeg.

“The plan from the beginning of the race was to do the sprint for me and I’m grateful to the boys for their support,” he said. “They were fantastic. I am super-happy to get this success and can tell you I’ll continue to work hard in order to repay the team for their confidence.”

The victory was the team’s 15th thus far this season. He is the 85th rider to win for the team since 2003.
