Tony Hurel (Direct Energie) won the second stage of the Tropicale Amissa Bongo ahead of race leader Mikel Aristi (Delko Marseille Provence KTM) and Stanislau Bazhkou (Minsk Cycling Club).
Yesterday it was Hurel’s teammate and late-race solo attack specialist Thomas Voeckler who went for the win, only to be caught in the closing kilometres. Today Voeckler went to work earlier than usual, attacking on the final climb of the day with Eritrean Awet Habtom and Russian Eduard Vorganov.
This softened the field and when the trio were caught it was Hurel who was able to get the best of Aristi — a flip of yesterday’s results.
The win passes the leader’s jersey from Aristi to Hurel.
