With Vincenzo Nibali missing the race after targeting the Giro d’Italia, Bahrain Merida is chasing success in the Tour de France with Ion Izagirre and Sonny Colbrelli. Izagirre won stage 20 in 2016 and was second overall in that year’s Tour de Suisse. Colbrelli won this year’s Brabantse Pijl/Flèche Brabançonne.
“Team Bahrain Merida is going to discover the inside view of Tour de France this year for it’s first year in the peloton,” said directeur sportif Philippe Mauduit. “It’s a challenge by itself, every day a Classic during 21 days.
“We will take it day by day fixing new goals every day and of course we will go with two leaders, as some stages fit really well to Sonny Colbrelli and some other to Ion Izagirre.”
He said that on the stages suited to all rounders, all the riders will have the chance to go in a breakaway. “The most important thing to increase our chances will be to keep the team spirit that our riders have always shown, to ride and act as a unique united team, showing our colours in front of the race and fighting for the best possible result.”
Also confirmed for the team are Janez Brajkovic, Ondrej Cink, Yukiya Arashiro, Tsgabu Grmay, Borut Bozic, Javier Moreno and Grega Bole.
