Jules wins Circuit Cycliste Sarthe opener

by Mark Zalewski

Justin Jules (WB Veranclassic Aqua Protect) won the field sprint on the first stage of Circuit Cycliste Sarthe, well ahead of Arthur Vichot (FDJ) and Andrea Vendrame (Androni Giocattoli).

“The start of the race was rather quiet — the final in the local circuit, which had to be traveled six times, was harder with the rain and the difficult profile,” said Jules. “The finish line was a false flat rising with a steeper part in the final 500 metres. It is at the top of this that I attacked to go alone when approaching the finish. This step suited me.

“The whole team did their best all day, rolling at the front of the pack, especially in the local circuits where it is necessary to not lose a place at the front.

A pair of riders, Ángel Madrazo (Delko Marseille Provence KTM) and Martijn Budding (Roompot – Nederlandse Loterij), tried a breakaway earlier on the stage. However, the parcours made it destined to be a sprint. The two finishing circuits saw multiple attacks from the likes of FDJ and Fortuneo Vital Concept. But the speeds were too high and the field came to the line together, with Jules powering away to take the win by a healthy margin.

Wednesday will have a double stage, with a likely sprint finish in the morning, followed by a time trial in the afternoon.
