Jules wins opening stage of Circuit Cycliste Sarthe

by VeloClub

Frenchman Justin Jules wears the first leader’s jersey after winning the opening stage of the Circuit Cycliste Sarthe – Pays de la Loire on Tuesday. The WB Aqua Protect Veranclassic rider was quickest in the dash to the line, beating compatriot Marc Sarreau (Groupama-FDJ), Belgium’s Christophe Noppe (Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise ) plus another Frenchman, Clement Venturini (AG2R La Mondiale).

The 193.6 kilometre stage took the riders from Abbaye Royale de l’Epau to Baugé-en-Anjou, and was undulating but without major climbs. It featured a long-distance breakaway which started six kilometres after the drop of the flag. The move comprised Romain Hardy (Fortuneo Samsic), Romain Combaud (Delko Marseille), Marco Frapporti (Androni Sidermec), Oscar Riesebeek (Rompoot) and Juan Felipe Osorio (Manzana-Postobon). These built a lead of five minutes, but were reeled in before the finish.

Jules’ previous results include fifth in this year’s Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne. The victory is the second of the season for his team. It previously took the GP de Denain with Kenny Dehaes.
