The usual suspects were on the podium of Tour of Chongming Island stage 1. With a mass sprint imminent in all of the three stages, Kirsten Wild (Cylance Pro Cycling) took the first of them, ahead of Chloe Hosking (Alé Cipollini) and Sarah Roy (Orica-Scott).
Stage one consisted of eleven laps on a 10.8 kilometer circuit. All breakaway attempts were met by the sprinter’s teams as they sped over the circuit. The bunch was all together heading into the final lap and the first stage in the first Women’s WorldTour stage race of the year ended in the predicted bunch sprint.
“Kirsten Wild started her sprint from the left,” said Orica-Scott DS Martin Barras. “And when Chloe Hosking and Sarah started to come up from the right, Wild closed the door. Nevertheless it was a great effort from Sarah and the team and a very auspicious start for us here in China,” he said about the third-place finish of his rider.
Wild dedicated her win to her teammate Marta Tagliaferro, who got caught up in a crash in the third lap and had to leave the race with a broken collarbone.
With the bonus seconds awarded at intermediate sprints, Hosking gets to wear the leader’s jersey in stage 2. She won the inaugural UCIWWT Tour of Chongming Island in 2016 and is obviously aiming to repeat that victory.
