Knol announces her retirement from professional cycling

by Jeanine Laudy

Dutchwoman Willeke Knol (Cylance Pro Cycling) today announced her retirement from professional cycling on her Instagram page. With a prominent place for God in her farewell statement, she thanked the teams she represented, her parents and her fiancé for being able to be a professional cyclist for the past five years.

Knol became a pro in 2013, after she earned one of the combativity jerseys in the 2012 Holland Ladies Tour as an amateur racer. She secured a contract with the women’s UCI team that was then called Argos-Shimano (now Team Sunweb). She had a teammate in fellow ‘Zwollenaar’ Kirsten Wild and would ride for the team for three years.

In 2016, she transferred to Lotto-Soudal, but her professional cycling career came full circle when she found herself once again on the same team as Wild at Cylance Pro Cycling. At 26 years old, Knol mentions her upcoming wedding as the next adventure to take on.

Life can be such a beautiful journey and I am thankful that I could do a part of that by bike!!!! So many unforgetable moments, all the places I have been to, the people I’ve met and the new friends I’ve found, so many lessons I’ve learnt. There are just not enough words…THANK YOU!!!!! My brothers & sisters and friends, they have always had my back even though I’ve missed quite a lot of their lives but they always understood and cheered me on or cheered me up. Thanks to my clubteam, they’ve supported me and gave me space to develop. To my trainers and coaches for all their wisdom and trust, also all staff and others for keeping me and my bikes healthy and fit. A huge thanks to all my teammates, for all incredible moments of joy, tears or just crazyness. For spending so much of their lives on the road with me. And ofcourse the teams and sponsors who made my dreams come true @teamsunweb @lotto_soudal @cylancecycling @teamknwu THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
