Linked to the news that Jumbo will become the main backer of the LottoNL-Jumbo team from the start of 2019, one of the squad’s top riders Steven Kruijswijk is set to extend his contract. According to AD.nl, a team spokesman has confirmed that the 30-year-old rider will remain with the team until at least the end of 2021.
Kruijswijk has been part of the setup for many years, being with the team when it was backed by Rabobank and Belkin. He showed his ability by taking eighth and seventh overall in the Giro d’Italia in 2011 and 2015 respectively, then went on to wear pink in 2016.
He might have won the race had he not crashed badly on stage 19, fracturing two ribs and losing time. He slipped down the GC but still managed to finish fourth overall. Last season he was third overall in the Tour de Suissse, fifth in the Tour de l’Ain and was ninth overall in the Vuelta a Espana.
His target this year is the Tour de France, a race where his best previous overall finish was 15th four seasons ago.
