When Lars Boom (LottoNL-Jumbo) crossed the line to win stage 5 of the BinckBack Tour it was clear how much the win meant to him. He offered a demonstrative victory celebration; one that, ultimately, has cost him 1,000 Swiss Francs for improper behaviour.
According to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Boom had been frustrated about missing out on selection for the Vuelta a Espana. Indeed, before his win at the BinckBank Tour, it had been a season of frustrations for Boom.
“The spring classics didn’t go as well as expected,” Boom said. “Afterwards, I was close to the Dutch title. I worked hard to reach this level, and it’s great that I could achieve this. I always want to win. Therefore, it’s beautiful I can end a difficult period with many doubts in this way. Finally, I have been able to deliver my team a win and that’s great.”
Boom took to Twitter to apologise for his behaviour.
