Liam Bertazzo wins the Tour of China I, Joe Cooper second

by CyclingTips

Victory on stage 2 of the Tour of China I has paved the way to overall success for Italian rider Liam Bertazzo (Wilier-Triestina).

Bertazzo took the lead of the five-stage Chinese race with his stage 2 victory and held firm over the remaining days to take the first stage-race victory of his career. It was an impressively consistent performance from the 25-year-old who, in addition to winning a stage, took two second places, a third, and a fourth.

Meanwhile, New Zealand champion Joe Cooper (IsoWhey Sports-SwissWellness) rode his way to second overall off the back of consecutive stage wins, one in a road race and one in the stage 4 individual time trial. Cooper ended the Tour 15 seconds down.

Once a 10-stage race, the Tour of China is now divided into two separate five-stage events: the Tour of China I and Tour of China II. The second of those starts in Hongjiang on Tuesday.
