Lilian Caelmejane wins Etoile de Besseges after stage 3 victory

by CyclingTips

Frenchman Lilian Calmejane (Direct Energie) has turned his solo victory on stage 3 of the Etoile de Besseges into overall victory in the five-stage French race.

The 2016 Vuelta a Espana stage winner attacked from the break on the hilly third stage to win the stage by seven seconds and take the overall lead. Calmejane finished in the bunch on stage 4 as Arnaud Demare (FDJ) dashed to his second stage win of the week, ahead of stage 2 winner Alexander Kristoff (Katusha).

And then in stage 5 ITT, which finished with a tough 3km climb, Calmejane rode to an impressive second place, behind Tony Gallopin (Lotto Soudal). That result ensured Calmejane would take out the race overall.
