Lopez doubles up at the Vuelta a España, Froome extends lead

by CyclingTips

Colombia’s Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) has claimed his second stage win of the 2017 Vuelta a España, climbing his way to a solo victory at the Alto Hoya de la Mora in the Sierra Nevada. Ilnur Zakarin (Katusha-Alpecin) was second and Wilco Kelderman (Sunweb) finished third.

Adam Yates (Orica-Scott) had been alone out front with roughly 4km to go when Lopez made contact then flew past the Briton. Lopez would go on to win stage 15 by more than 30 seconds.

Chris Froome (Sky) extended his overall lead in the race by another six seconds by distancing his closest rival, Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) on the final climb. Nibali had attacked on the climb, but was caught and overtaken by Froome.

Earlier in the weekend Rafal Majka (Bora-hansgrohe) took his first-ever Vuelta stage victory, arriving solo at the uphill finish in Sierra de La Pandera, ahead of Lopez and Nibali.

The riders of the 2017 Vuelta will now enjoy their second rest day before the race continues on Tuesday.
