Louis Meintjes to switch focus to the Giro d’Italia in 2018

Louis Meintjes (UAE Team Emirates) has snuck under the radar at the past two Tours de France … as much as it’s possible to sneak to a top-10 finish at the world’s biggest bike race. In both 2016 and 2017 the South African finished eighth overall thanks to consistent performances in the mountains.

Louis Meintjes returns to the Dimension Data setup in 2018 after two years with Lampre/UAE Team Emirates.

In 2018, as he makes his return to the Dimension Data setup, Meintjes is switching his focus from the Tour de France to the Giro d’Italia. It’s all part of a plan to vie for the yellow jersey at the Tour in 2020.

“Louis has an exciting opportunity now to challenge for real high placings in the next few years, especially in 2018, to get right up in the top 10 of a Grand Tour and get closer and closer to the podium,” said team principal Doug Ryder at a team press conference. “So that will be a big objective for Louis, and obviously the target being the yellow jersey at the Tour de France in 2020.”

Meintjes himself believes riding the Giro will make him a more rounded rider.

“I think for next year we’re going to take a slightly different approach and use the Giro as a test, and a learning curve, trying to learn new skills and get some more experience and confidence,” he said. “Hopefully by 2020 we can use that experience to take the step up in the Tour.”
