Marcel Kittel wins the Dubai Tour with three stage victories

by CyclingTips

Marcel Kittel (QuickStep Floors) has started his 2017 season in fine form, winning three stages, the points classification and the general classification at the Dubai Tour. It’s the second season in a row that Kittel has won the 2.HC event and it’s a result that puts him in good stead as the European season begins.

Kittel won both of the first two stages, both of which were decided in bunch sprints, before taking victory again on the fifth and final stage.

“I’m extremely proud of what I achieved today: my second Dubai Tour overall in a row, my 75th career victory,” Kittel said after edging out Elia Viviani (Sky) and Riccardo Minali (Astana) on the final stage. “When I came back to Dubai, I thought this is a nice race, it’s a goal for me, but I didn’t think it would go so well. The team did a really good job. It’s a very nice way to start the season.”

Stage 4, which was scheduled to end with the short punchy climb to the Hatta Dam, was cancelled after strong winds and sandstorms whipped across the course, making conditions dangerous for the riders.
