Mass disqualification at Scheldeprijs train crossing

by Caley Fretz

More than thirty riders were disqualified from the sprinter’s classics Scheldeprijs on Wednesday when riders ducked under a closing train crossing.

Contenders Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ), Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Davide Martinelli (QuickStep Floors) were all kicked out of the race. Race favorite Marcel Kittel (Katusha) was in the front group, which passed through the crossing before it began to close. His teammate Tony Martin was disqualified.

Winds split the peloton early in the race, which started on the Dutch coast this year. The disqualified group was the second on the road. Riders ducked under closing gates and were quickly chased down by race commissaires. A few riders refused to stop, riding on, but all were eventually removed from the race.
