In today’s edition of the CyclingTips Daily News Digest: Alexey Lutsenko wins the Tour of Oman; Tim Wellens secures the overall at Ruta del Sol; Michal Kwiatkowski takes out the Volta ao Algarve; Jonathan Hivert wins both stages and overall at Haut Var Matin; Mathieu van der Poel and Sanne Cant take Superprestige wins in Middelkerke; Riders critical of Froome’s appearance at the Ruta del Sol.
World champion Sanne Cant (Iko-Beobank) and European champion Mathieu van der Poel (Corendon-Circus) have wrapped up overall victories at the Superprestige cyclocross series with each rider winning the final round in Middelkerke, The Netherlands over the weekend.
Cant led by just one point going into the final race, with Maud Kaptheijns (Crelan-Charles) lurking dangerously behind after winning the first four rounds of the series. Kaptheijns and Cant quickly emerged as the strongest on the day, the pair getting clear in the early stages. Cant made a move on lap 3 but was caught by Kaptheijns, but the world champion attacked again on lap 5 and rode away to victory. Kaptheijns was second while Laura Verdonschot (Marlux-Bingoal) took out the sprint for third.
In the elite men’s race van der Poel rode to yet another solo victory to take his sixth win of the eight-round series and the series overall. Van der Poel was part of an elite lead group that had formed by lap 2 and by lap 3 the Dutch phenom was off the front on his own, as he’s so often been over this season.
Van der Poel took a small tumble on lap 4 but it wasn’t nearly enough of a setback to stop him winning the race and the series. Tim Merlier (Crelan-Charles) was second while Michael Vanthourenhout (Marlux-Bingoal) was third.
