Mathieu van der Poel victorious in the Boucles de la Mayenne

Former cyclocross world champion Mathieu van der Poel (Beobank – Corendon) has continued his impressive form on the road, taking two stage wins and the overall at the Boucles de la Mayenne in Western France.

Van der Poel was third in the prologue individual time trial, second on stage 1 — winning the bunch sprint behind solo winner Johan Le Bon (FDJ) — and then won the final two stages, both of them in a bunch sprint. The Dutchman’s stage 3 victory moved him into the overall lead, which he was able to extend from one second to 11 seconds by winning the final stage.

Van der Poel has now taken part in two stage races on the road in 2017. His success at the Boucles de la Mayenne adds to his stage win at the Baloise Belgium Tour.
