Maurits Lammertink crowned Tour de Luxembourg winner

by Matt de Neef

Dutchman Maurits Lammertink (Roompot-Oranje Peloton) has taken the biggest victory of his career, winning the 2.HC Tour of Luxembourg over the weekend.

The 25-year-old moved into the overall lead on stage 2 when he finished second behind Philippe Gilbert (BMC). On stage 3, a four-rider breakaway survived until the end with Anthony Turgis (Cofidis) taking line honours ahead of Chris Juul-Jensen (Orica-GreenEdge), Mathias Frank (IAM) and Luis Angel Mate (Cofidis). Lammertink finished in the main bunch, 13 seconds back, and held on to his lead.

The final stage was something of a repeat of two days prior, with Gilbert winning on the uphill finish ahead of Lammertink. Dylan Teuns (BMC) rounded out the podium.

For Gilbert, his wins in Luxembourg give him three victories for the year and will only help in his search for a new team for 2017 and beyond. For Lammertink, a rider also out of contract at the end of this year, the win is just his second ever GC victory.
