Meeusen moves up switch from Telenet-Fidea to Beobank Corendon

by CyclingTips

While road cycling contracts running the calendar year make some sense, with little top-level road racing happening between November and January, the fact that cyclocross contracts follow the same schedule is one of the oddities of the sport — with riders occasionally changing teams mid-season. The tensions between Tom Meeusen and his Telenet-Fidea team were widely-known and reported, as was the news that he would be changing teams after his contract runs out at the end of the year. However, both parties decided to accelerate that switch, with Telenet-Fidea releasing him to the Beobank Corendon team as of 25 April.

“It’s nice that I can end my collaboration with Telenet-Fidea Lions after so many years in a good way — I want to thank both parties for the smooth handling of my transition,” said Meeusen in a statement.

Meeusen signed his contract with Beobank-Corendon back in February to take effect on January 1, 2018, after his current contract expires.

“After Tom announced his departure in February, we searched for a constructive approach to bridge the transition period,” said Sven Nys, team manager of the Telenet-Fidea Lions.

“An early transition was the best option for everyone anyway and we have therefore made it work in the past weeks. I want to thank Tom on behalf of the whole team and the sponsors for all the years he gave the best of himself for Telenet-Fidea. We wish him every success in his future career.”
