Military explodes suspicious bag at finish during men’s road race

by CyclingTips

The Brazilian military carried out a controlled explosion near the Copacabana finish line of the men’s road cycling race on Saturday, witnesses said. The explosion stunned crowds gathering for the end of the race, though the leaders were still about 100 kilometres from the finish of the race.

“You hear all these terrible things about how it is going to be and then you get here and it seems fine,” said Lorie Schmetterling, who is staying nearby to where they explosion occurred as she watches her daughter compete in rowing events. “Then this happens and you feel it, you go on high alert again.”

Bomb squads have detonated several unattended bags in controlled explosions around Rio amid high security for the start of the Games. A security source told Reuters that officials were particularly concerned about this bag because it was close to the Russian hospitality site.

This detonation followed  one of another unattended bag near the same spot on Friday evening during the opening ceremony for the Games.
