Calls to cancel Giro’s Israel start, MIPS in dispute with POC: Daily News Digest
MIPS, the company best known for its Brain Protection System (BPS) helmet-based safety technology, has won a German-based Ex parte preliminary injunction against fellow Swedish company POC, putting a halt to sales of equipped helmets within Germany.
The claimed patent infringement surrounds POC’s new Shearing Pad INside, or “SPIN” equipped helmets. POC’s technology was announced in August 2017 for use in its downhill and Enduro mountain bike helmet models.
POC has responded to the news, saying that it “has not, as yet, been contacted or received any official documentation or notification related to the ruling. In addition, no hearing has been held and no detailed argumentation relating to the infringement and validity or the opportunity to make submissions has, to date, been provided. If the ruling is served POC will immediately oppose the ruling.”
CyclingTips reached out to MIPS’ President and CEO, Johan Thiel who had this to say of the matter. “”MIPS is hoping that the injunction in Germany allows for a more productive conversation with POC on how we collaborate in the future to make better helmets that perform to a high standard of brain protection and safety. Should that not be possible, we need to move to protect our intellectual property to the extent necessary.”
POC is an existing customer of MIPS. However, MIPS claims that existing business represents less than 1% of net sales for the company’s helmet safety technology.
