New RCS Medigroup president considers auctioning Giro TV rights

by CyclingTips

Urbano Cairo, the new president of RCS Mediagroup which owns the Giro d’Italia, has said he is considering auctioning the television rights for next year’s race, in a effort to increase the event’s visibility.

“If you do something nice .. people will buy it. The goal is to give the Giro d’Italia greater visibility; everything is possible,” he said.

The race is traditionally broadcast by Radiotelevisione Italiana S.p.A. (RAI), Italy’s national public broadcasting company. However, Cairo suggested that he would entertain bids from other broadcasters, such as La7 or Discovery Channel. La7 is an Italian private television channel owned by Cairo Communication, of which Urbano Cairo is the chairman.

This could be a move by Cairo to prod RAI into doing more from a production standpoint, such as on-board camera streaming. “I would like to live the stage as a MotoGP race, where you seem to be the pilot,” he said.

In regards to a new broadcaster bidding on the rights, he said it would be measured against what RAI currently offers. “La7 must make an offer that is more competitive.”
