Nibali operated on in Italy

Former Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta a España champion Vincenzo Nibali went under the knife in Bergamo, Italy on Thursday, having surgery to remove metal which was previously inserted more than a year ago.

His Bahrain-Merida team said that he had checked into the Papa Giovanni XXIII hospital in Bergamo in order to have his left collarbone plate removed. It was originally put into place following the 2016 Olympic Games, where he suffered a double fracture of the collarbone in a crash.

“Nibali has successfully undergone the surgery carried out by Prof. Claudio Castelli, [the] Director of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, and by Antonino Cassisi, manager of the Department of Maxillofacial surgery, regarding the aesthetic reconstructive part,” stated Bahrain-Merida head doctor Carlo Guardascione.

He said that Nibali will have a period of absolute rest for eight to 10 days to allow the wound to fully heal. The removal of the plate indicates the bone has fully bonded and that there is no further use for the plate.
