Niemiec solos to stage 1 win at the Tour of Turkey

by Matt de Neef

Lampre-Merida’s Przemyslaw Niemiec has taken a surprise victory on the opening stage of the Presidential Tour of Turkey, winning solo after being in the day-long breakaway.

“It’s a surprise indeed,” Niemiec admitted after the finish. “At the start, everybody expected a bunch sprint finish but when my breakaway companions decided to give up as our advantage was reduced to 40 seconds, I decided to continue. I’m glad I did.”

Niemiec got in the early break after 17km of racing, joining Rémy Di Gregorio (Delko Marseille Provence), Nikita Stalnov (Astana City) and José Gonçalves (Caja Rural-RGA) at the head of affairs. Adam Hansen (Lotto Soudal) and Lluis Mas (Caja Rural-RGA) made it across to a Goncalves-less lead group with 90km to go and then Niemiec made his move with 40km remaining.

Niemiec crossed the line 11 seconds ahead of previous break-mate Goncalves, with the peloton being led in by Marco Zanotti (Parkhotel Valkenburg CT) a further five seconds later.
