Villalobos wins at San Juan; strong field for Abu Dhabi Tour: Daily News Digest
The new Australian Cycling Academy – Ride Sunshine Coast team has announced the signing of former Caja Rural development team rider Freddy Ovett. “Fresh off a season riding for Caja Rural in Spain, and smashing Strava records everywhere he goes, we can’t wait to see what this guy can do this year,” it said via Facebook. “First up on the program: @heraldsuntour.”
Ovett is the son of Olympic gold medallist Steve Ovett, one of Britain’s best-ever runners, and was himself a strong athlete. However after suffering a knee injury, he focussed on cycling and competed in 2015 with the Ag2r La Mondiale development squad. He moved to SEG Racing Academy in 2016 and was with Caja Rural’s development team last season.
The 24-year-old Australian is yet to land success in UCI events, but recently broke the Strava record for the 1 in 20, Melbourne’s most popular climb. He was 20th in last year’s Classica da Arrabida – Cylin’Portugal.
The Australian Cycling Academy – Ride Sunshine Coast team was launched in December with the goal to “create a better future for Australian cyclists, on and off the bike.”
