Bonifazio wins third field sprint in as many stages in Poland

by Mark Zalewski

Niccolo Bonifazio (Trek – Segafredo) won the third stage of the Tour of Poland in a field sprint ahead of Moreno Hofland (Team LottoNL – Jumbo) and Luka Mezgec (ORICA-BikeExchange).

The second place finish gives Hofland the lead in the points competition. Race leader and double-stage winner Fernando Gaviria (Etixx – QuickStep) finished in 14th but remains in the yellow jersey.

After multiple breakaway attempts tried and failed a group of five escaped and gained over five minutes. The break included Matej Mohoric (Lampre-Merida), Kamil Gradek (VERVA-Activejet), Lukasz Owsian, (CCC Sprandi Polkowice), Ivan Savitskiy (Gazprom-Rusvelo) and Przemyslaw Kasperkiewicz (Poland)

The gap held for a long time, and even went up after the peloton had made some of the time back. It was not until inside the final 10km that the last of the break was caught. Etixx-QuickStep was on the front working for its sprinter and race leader Gaviria.

Maciej Paterski (CCC Sprandi Polkowice) made a solo attack at 2km to go and disrupted the sprint lead-out plans. The field caught him at 1km to go and from there is was a mad dash to the line with little organization with Bonifazio emerging for the win.
