Pozdnyakov wins stage two of the Tour d’Azerbaidjan

by VeloClub

The Synergy Baku Cycling Project clocked up a home victory on Thursday, winning stage two of the Tour d’Azerbaidjan.

Kirill Pozdnyakov took a solo victory for the Azerbaidjani squad, attacking alone inside the final 15 kilometres and hitting the line first in Ismayilli. He finished 39 seconds clear of Oleksandr Polivoda (Kolss Cycling Team) and a further four ahead of Dennis Van Winden (Israel Cycling Academy), taking over the leader’s jersey in the process.

“It was a hard race and it took a lot of effort to stay away from the chasing group in the final part of the stage,” he said. “I gave all I had and it worked out today. I’m really glad that I was able to take the stage win and become the GC leader in our home race.

“My teammate Maksym Averin told us everything about the race and the roads, so I knew what to expect. We’re ready to defend our jersey, that’s what we’re here for.”

A break of 27 riders went clear early on, with this being whittled down to 12 by crashes and the selective terrain. Pozdnyakov went clear from this group to win and the Russian now leads Polivoda and Mykhaylo Kononenko (Kolss Cycling Team) in the general classification.
