Pujol wins Mt. Fuji stage at Tour of Japan

by Mark Zalewski

Oscar Pujol (Team UKYO) won the traditionally short Mt. Fuji climbing stage at the Tour of Japan, taking over the race lead. He covered the 11.3km stage in 38:50, beating Hamid Pourhashemi (Tabriz Shahrdary Team) 1:22 and teammate Nathan Earle (Team UKYO) by another 36 seconds.

The climb averages just over 10 percent and rises from 800m to 1,147m and was made even tougher with rain.

Pujol won this same stage in 2016 on his way to winning the overall, but two seconds faster at 38:48.

He now has a healthy lead of 1:42 over Pourhashemi and 1:52 over his teammate Earle, with his chances for a repeat performance now very likely.
