Richie Porte wins the Tour de Romandie

by CyclingTips

A strong performance against the clock has seen Australia’s Richie Porte (BMC) take the overall victory at the Tour de Romandie.

Porte was sitting second overall coming into the final stage, 19 seconds behind Briton Simon Yates (Orica-Scott) who edged out Porte a day earlier on the race’s queen stage. But in the stage 5 individual time trial, Porte put 40 seconds into Yates to secure the race overall . The stage was won by Slovenia’s Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo) who completed the 18.3km course in a time of 24:58 (43.98km/h average), good enough to beat Porte by six seconds.

“It’s a massive shock to be honest,” said Porte of his overall victory. “I didn’t think I’d be able to claw that much time back from the time trial. Tip my hat to my teammates firstly for all the work they’ve done this week.

“Yates, I think he’s a super talent. He rolled me yesterday in the stage, so it was sweet to get a victory. He won the battle, but I won the war a little bit there. It’s just nice to keep the momentum rolling for July.”

Porte now has five wins to his name in 2017, including overall victories at the Santos Tour Down Under and Tour de Romandie. He is building towards the Tour de France in July where he’ll lead the BMC Racing Team.
