Robbie McEwen on the Belgian terror attacks

by Matt de Neef

Australia’s Robbie McEwen spent much of his professional cycling career living in Belgium and now, in the wake of the terror attacks that rocked Brussels, McEwen has penned an opinion piece for News Limited about the Belgium that he knows. Here’s an excerpt:

NUMB. Belgium is in shock. Although everyone was aware of the terror threat in their own backyard, this small, peaceful country wasn’t prepared for a horrific attack like this.

My wife is Belgian, my kids were born there, I lived there for 16 years. Although we now live 16,000km away in Australia, this hits close to home. I used to catch the train to Zaventem airport regularly when I was going away to cycling events all over Europe. Our family stood at those check-in counters so many times. We all have so many questions and very few answers.

The numbness will be replaced by a steely resolve, that is the Belgians I know. A country that has always felt “safe” is now one of people who fear. Fear for their safety, fear for their way of life, fear of travelling, fear of strangers.

Fear and loathing of these extremists, who have hijacked and hide behind a religion that does not support their ideology, who have been able to live in Belgium, prepare and carry out these atrocities. The fear will be replaced by a defiance. Belgium will not be held hostage by fear.
