Confidence on the up after his overall win in the Volta ao Algarve, Primoz Roglic has said he has increased belief that he can challenge for stage race titles.
Roglic finished second to Dan Martin on stage two, but wrested the race lead from him in the following day’s time trial.
“It’s wait and see what the future brings,” he said on Sunday. “I want to be good in the time trials, but also in the mountains. I hope to win more races like this one.”
The former ski jumper won the Tours of Azerbaijan and Slovenia in 2015, but the Volta ao Algarve is a far more important notch in his belt. His biggest victory is his stage nine win in last year’s Giro d’Italia.
His latest success has boosted his morale and self-belief. “We did it perfectly. At the beginning of the race we controlled the pack and on the climb, it was up to me,” he said, referring to his successful defence of the jersey on Friday
“In the final, I had three team-mates with me, but on the climb, it was every man for himself.”
Next up for him is Strade Bianche and Tirreno-Adriatico. The latter will be another test of his evolving stage race abilities.
