Rubiano avoids massive crash to win stage one of the Tour de Qinghai Lake

by VeloClub

Colombian rider Miguel Rubiano avoided chaos and danger to take the opening stage of the Tour of Qinghai Lake in China on Sunday, proving quickest in the bunch sprint into Xining.

He beat Italian Daniele Colli (Nippo-Vini Fantini), Dutchman Remco Te Brake (Parkhotel-Valkenburg CT) and others to the line.

“I am very happy for this victory as it is very important for me and my team,” he told Eurosport afterwards. “But it was a very nervous finish and I just barely missed the person crossing the street from the left. I was very lucky, others were not.”

Rubiano was referring to a brutal crash caused inside the final two kilometres by a spectator who walked on the road. He was hit by a peloton speeding towards the line, and the collision ended up taking down at least a third of the peloton.

An earlier crash occurred inside the first five kilometres when 28-year-old New Zealand cyclist Morgan Smith (Kenyan Riders Downunder) was hit by a motorbike. Initial reports suggested that he was given stitches to his knee and chin but is doing well.
