Evtushenko wins stage 1 of the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon

by VeloClub

Russian rider Alexander Evtushenko (Lokosphinx) soloed to victory on the first stage of the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon on Friday, hitting the line seven seconds clear of a 14 man chase group. Daniel Mestre (Efapel) and Rafael Reis (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) led in that group for second and third.

The stage from Aguilar de Campoo and Santibañez de la Peña was marked by a 15 man break, in which these three were present. Several teams were represented, decreasing the motivation for a committed chase behind, and a gap of over three minutes was established.

Later on teams such as Movistar, Sporting Tavira, Cycling Academy and Caja Rural-Seguros RGA mounted a chase but just ran out of time. Evtushenko profited from a momentary drop in pace in the lead group to launch his attack inside the closing kilometres, and held off his former breakaway companions to win.

The main bunch finished 22 seconds back, keeping things relatively close heading into Saturday’s Queen stage. It runs between Velilla del Río Carrión (Palencia) and the first category Alto de La Camperona. The race concludes on Sunday.
