BUNINYONG, Australia (CT) – Callum Scotson (Mitchelton-BikeExchange) has won the men’s U23 individual time trial at the Australian Road National Championships for the third year running. Scotson powered through the 29.5km out-and-back course in a time of 39:21, finishing just seven seconds clear of teammate Sam Jenner. Jason Lea (Bennelong-SwissWellness) completed the podium another seven seconds behind.
“It feels great,” Scotson said afterwards. “My last year in the under 23s, I’d won it the last two years so … there was a bit of pressure but I didn’t really think about it. It’s really a relief when you get across the line in first place.”
In 2018, Scotson hopes to continue balancing his road and track ambitions.
“Just the thought of doing another Olympic Games is really big in my mind,” he said. “Immediately I also need to try and get results to move into the professional ranks [on the road] which is a bit of a dream of mine.”
Earlier today Luke Plapp won the U19 men’s individual time trial ahead of Tyler Lindorff and Mitchell Wright (ACA-Ride Sunshine Coast). The 2018 Australian Road Nationals continue on Friday with the U19 women’s, U23 & elite women’s, and elite men’s individual time trials.
