Break spoils sprinter’s day at SterZLM Tour

by CyclingTips

Wesley Kreder (Roompot-Oranje Peloton) won the second stage of the SterZLM Tour out of a three-rider breakaway ahead of Twan Van den Brand (Cyclingteam Jo Piels) and Merijn Korevaar (Rabobank Development Team).

The hard-charging peloton was led across the line by a frustrated Marcel Kittel (Etixx-QuickStep).

The city circuit stage of 186km seemed to be a predictable one for a field sprint, and the break going 36km into the race had a long road ahead. But with one lap and 20km remaining they still held two minutes.

LottoNL-Jumbo and Etixx-QuickStep were driving the pace, but the trio off the front worked well together to hold them off.

Kreder, himself a decent sprinter, was challenged by Van den Brand in the final sprint, while Korevaar settled for third.
