Stig Broeckx hospitalised after being taken out by moto in Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne

by Matt de Neef

Stig Broeckx’s Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne came to an untimely end yesterday when the Lotto Soudal rider was hit by a race moto some 35km from the finish. As the video below shows, Broeckx drifted out from the peloton and while the moto pilot tried to avoid Broeckx, he wasn’t able to do so.

Lotto Soudal released a statement after the race revealing the extent of Broeckx’s injuries:

“Stig Broeckx was hit by a motor rider during the race and he crashed really hard. He was transferred to the hospital of Deinze,” the statement read. “This is the diagnosis: a displaced fracture of his right collarbone, a rib fracture and a bruised hand. Tonight, Broeckx will undergo surgery of the collarbone fracture. Due to these injuries, he won’t be able to race the following weeks.”

Somewhat ironically, the moto appeared to be ridden by one of the race doctors, judging by the logo on the back of his jacket.
