Three-time cyclocross world champion Zdenek Stybar (Etixx-QuickStep) returned to cyclocross racing today at Azencross — one of two races he is planning for this week before heading back to start training for the 2017 road season. While he had a strong start he found the speed of the racing a little high for his current condition, eventually finishing 18th.

“Maybe I rode a little too enthusiastic in the opening lap,” he told Sporza after the race. “I knew that I would eventually pay the price.”
“It was the first time again I went full throttle in a cross race and it was not easy.”
Like others in the race, he had trouble with the slippery conditions and crashed when his front wheel washed out. But the crash was not hard and he was able to quickly remount.
“It was fun, but my body was not prepared to ride so fast. I think that tomorrow will be better in Bredene.”
