The Sunweb men, too, pulled off something of an upset in Bergen over the weekend, winning the team time trial world title ahead of their more fancied rivals.

Led by TT specialist and Giro d’Italia winner Tom Dumoulin, Sunweb completed the 42.5km course in 47:50 (53.3km/h), enough to finish eight seconds clear of BMC and 22 seconds clear of the Chris Froome-led Team Sky.

“I expected we’d fight for the podium because we had a strong team for this course but to get away with the win is crazy,” Dumoulin said. “It wasn’t a surprise that we did well because it felt strong and it felt fast. We didn’t overcomplicate things today. We raced hard and trusted that we’d go fast without overthinking it.

“We did it on feeling and apparently that worked.”
