Estonian rider Tanel Kangert (Astana) has been forced to abandon the Giro d’Italia after breaking his elbow in a shocking crash on Sunday’s stage 15.
Kangert hit a traffic island with 10km left in the stage, catapulting himself into a metal pole before tumbling on to the roadway beyond.
“[Kangert] suffered contusions of the lumbar and dorsal regions, his right shoulder, and a displaced fracture of his right elbow,” read the race medical bulletin. “He was transported to the Bergamo hospital for further exams.”
Kangert had been riding strongly in the Giro and was sitting seventh overall, 4:55 behind Dumoulin.
