Thomas De Gendt helps with Tom Simpson memorial

by CyclingTips

Lotto Soudal’s Thomas De Gendt helped with the construction of steps to the recently repaired Tom Simpson memorial near the top of Mont Ventoux. De Gendt was the most recent rider to win on Ventoux, on the wind-shortened stage 12 of this year’s Tour de France.

Simpson’s daughter Joanne was also on-hand to help with the construction.

De Gendt team’s sponsor Soudal helped by providing materials and support for the construction. A video of the construction played during the Lotto Soudal team presentation this week.

The memorial was erected to mark the spot where Tom Simpson died during the 1967 Tour de France, but suffered damage during a storm in 2013. Repairs were made in 2014 and a set of steps were planned to connect the road to the memorial.

2017 will mark the 50th anniversary of Simpson’s death.
