Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) has secured overall victory at the BinckBack Tour (formerly the Eneco Tour) after defending his lead through Sunday’s final stage of racing.
Dumoulin moved into the overall lead on the penultimate stage when he finished second to Tim Wellens (Lotto Soudal). On that stage the pair joined forces out front with 22km to go, building a small lead and continuing to the finish together.
On stage 7, the race’s final stage, Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo) attacked from an elite lead group with 3.5km to go, opening up enough of a gap to win the stage. Philippe Gilbert (QuickStep Floors) led home the pursuit, just one second behind, while Dumoulin was third. The end result: a 17-second overall victory to Dumoulin, ahead of Wellens, with Stuyven in third.
“It’s great to finally win here after a few years of being close,” Dumoulin said after the final stage. “This was our goal and we all had to come together to make it happen, which we did. The team was super strong every day and today it was up to us but we had it all under control, and I had good legs today.”
