Keukeleire wins Tour de Slovénie opener

by CyclingTips

Jens Keukeleire (Orica-GreenEdge) won the field sprint on the first stage of the Tour de Slovénie, ahead of Diego Ulissi (Lampre-Merida) and Jack Haig (Orica-GreenEdge).

The 178km stage was intended for the sprinters, though short climbs near the finish line gave options for a late-stage attack.

The main break was initiated by Jon Boic (Adria Mobil Cycling) and included Kenny De Ketele (Topsport Vlaanderen), Tilen Finkst (Radenska Ljubljana), Michele Viola (Meridiana Kamen Team) and Mark Canecky (Amplatz-BMC). Their advantage quickly grew to more than five minutes until Lampre-Merida and Dimension Data began to work on the front of the peloton.

The peloton caught the break 15km before the finish. Shortly after, a counter-attack from Pavel Kochetkov (Katusha) and Pavel Brutt (Tinkoff) tried thwart the sprinters, but without success.

Orica-GreenEdge’s strong leadout gave Jens Keukeleire the win with a healthy gap and the leader’s jersey.
