Tour du Poitou-Charentes: Bouhanni wins stage 2

by Shane Stokes

Turning around the result from stage one, Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis) got the better of Elia Viviani (Team Sky) on day two of the Tour du Poitou-Charentes on Wednesday. The Frenchman beat his Italian rival plus compatriot Damien Touze (HP BTP – Auber 93) and the rest of the bunch to the line in Roumazières-Loubert.

The success saw him end the day level on time with Viviani but taking the race leader’s jersey from the stage one winner. Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) is seven seconds back in third, with Danilo Napolitano (Wanty – Groupe Gobert) and Damien Touze (HP BTP – Auber 93) a further five seconds adrift.

Early on Tom Bohli (BMC Racing Team), Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) and Flavien Dassonville (HP BTP-Auber 93) pushed ahead. They were chased and subsequently joined by Jérémy Cabot (Roubaix-Lille Métropole), who helped them to gain a lead of almost four minutes. However they were all hauled back inside the final ten kilometres, with Dassonville the last to resist. He was caught six kilometres out.

Sylvain Chavanel (Direct Energie) clipped away close to the line but there was to be no denying Bouhanni, who thundered to the win and the leader’s jersey.
