Tour of Hainan: Mosca continues Wilier Triestina success

by VeloClub

Jakub Mareczko’s grip on the Tour of Hainan was finally broken on Friday, although by winning the stage Jacopo Mosca ensured that success stayed within the Wilier Triestina ranks. The Italian rider outsprinted Spain’s Benjamin Prades (Team Ukyo) at the finish in Wuzhishan, with Dutchman Marc De Maar (Hengxiang Cycling Team) netting third, two seconds back.

“It’s unbelievable,” he told Eurosport at the finish. “We have another time the jersey of the leader. It’s unbelievable, and I say thank you to all my team-mates and staff, because this week we have big, big team.”

He inherited the race lead from Mareczko, who struggled on the lumpy terrain and finished more than 14 minutes back. Mosca now has a three second lead over Prades, with the Ukrainian Mykhaylo Kononenko (Kolss Cycling Team) a further five seconds back in third. With just two stages remaining, the Wilier Triestina team will do all it can to hold on to yellow.

Early on 19 riders went clear in a big breakaway group. Mosca was part of the move, while the Australian Sam Crome (IsoWhey Sports-Swisswellness) and KOM jersey wearer Vitaly Buts (Kolss) were also there, with the former wresting the jersey from his shoulders of the latter.

On the final climb Crome went clear with Prades. They were joined by Mosca, Oleksandr Polivoda (Kolss) and
Enrico Barbin (Bardiani CSF), while Hengxiang’s Marc De Maar was able to bridge from the peloton. He put in two surges inside the final two kilometres but was unable to break the elastic; instead, Mosca was strongest and took both the stage and the yellow jersey.
