Modolo sprints to win at Tour of Croatia opener

by Mark Zalewski

Sacha Modolo (UAE Team Emirates) won the opening stage at the Tour of Croatia in a field sprint ahead of the Nippo-Vini Fantini pair of Eduard Grosu and Nicolas Marini.

The breakaway went early, with some riders looking to stay warm in the cold and damp conditions. Six riders made up the main break with a gap of two minutes at 50km to go.

The gap fell by regular intervals as the kilometres ticked off. At 15km to go the group only numbered four and the gap was under ten seconds. However, the peloton was led by smaller teams while the WorldTour teams sat and waited. As a result the catch was not made for another five kilometres, with the leaders dangling and some counterattacks attempted. But with 9km to go the group was caught and the bigger teams, having gotten a free ride for the past few kilometres, finally began to move into position for the field sprint.

Bardiani-CSF was the first team to organise on the front, but a little too early, at 3km to go. Astana, Bahrain-Merida, UAE Team Emirates and Trek-Segafredo slowly and patiently moved up behind them. At 1.4km to go Trek-Segafredo took over the front working for Italian champ Giacomo Nizzolo.

Into the finale the teams negotiated the final curves just before the flamme rouge and were single file. Nizzolo had two riders on the front, delivering him to the finish. But Modolo came up the inside at the right moment, and made his move.
