Scarponi nets Astana first win of season at Tour of the Alps

by Mark Zalewski

Michele Scarponi (Astana) ended the win drought for his team, taking the first stage of the Tour of the Alps, ahead of Geraint Thomas (Team Sky) and Thibaut Pinot (FDJ).

Matthias Krizek (Tirol Cycling Team), Iuri Filiosi (Nippo-Vini Fantini) and Francesco Gavazzi (Androni Giocattoli) made up the early breakaway on the day, but FDJ rode tempo on the front of the peloton to keep the gap manageable. Late in the stage Team Sky also pitched in.

Nate Brown (Cannondale-Drapac) attacked out of the peloton in a solo attempt but that was covered. Not long after the catch of the breakaway was made and the GC favourites moved forward to battle.

Less than 5km from the finish a stacked group formed off the front, including favourites such as Rohan Dennis (BMC), Domenico Pozzovivo (AG2R La Mondiale) and Davide Formolo (Cannondale-Drapac).

Thomas and Pozzovivo did the most attacking during the finale with Scarponi waiting patiently, following wheels and saving energy. This enabled him to take the sprint, along with the first leader’s jersey.
