U23 rider hospitalised after car swerves into him at Worlds

Finnish rider Joni Kanevra was hospitalised on Friday after a team car driver swerved during the U23 Worlds road race, sending the 22-year-old crashing into the barriers.

The vehicle swerved to the left to overtake a vehicle that had stopped in front. The deviation brought down Kanevra, who was passing at that exact moment. Kanerva suffered a broken collarbone, bruised ribs and facial cuts and was reportedly in a stable condition in hospital.

A similar incident incident in the elite men’s race saw Australia’s Mat Hayman crash out after just 70km.

“I saw the footage of the U23 rider and it was along the same idea,” Hayman told Cyclingnews. “All the cars stopped in the middle of the corner, people were moving and I had nowhere to go.

“I’m not sure if I actually hit the car. I came pretty close. I was coming back from a stop and I have the feeling that a lot of the guys here in the convoy don’t drive the rest of the year at races.”
